On March 31st, 1889:

Eiffel Tower opened to the public

On March 31, 1889, the Eiffel Tower officially opened to the public in Paris. Designed by Gustave Eiffel, this iconic iron structure was constructed as the entrance arch for the 1889 Exposition Universelle, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution.

Gustave Eiffel led the project with his team, and the tower's construction took two years to complete. The first visitors to the Eiffel Tower were greeted with magnificent views of Paris from its 300-meter height, which made it the tallest man-made structure at that time.

The public reaction was mixed at first; many Parisians protested its construction, calling it an eyesore. However, the Eiffel Tower quickly became one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world and a symbol of French culture.

The Eiffel Tower has seen over 300 million visitors since its opening, making it one of the most visited paid monuments globally. Each year, the tower sparkles with 20,000 light bulbs for five minutes every hour after sunset, creating a dazzling evening display.

Initially designed to be temporary, the Eiffel Tower was almost dismantled after 20 years but was saved due to its usefulness as a radio transmission tower. The structure has undergone several renovations and restorations to maintain its integrity and appearance over the years.

The Eiffel Tower was painted for the first time in 1899, and since then, it has been repainted every seven years on average. The current color is known as "Eiffel Tower Brown," a unique hue created specifically for the structure.

During World War II, the elevator cables were cut, and the tower was closed to the public, sparking a rumor that Hitler ascended to the top. However, the story is unfounded as he never climbed the tower.

The Eiffel Tower's design inspired numerous replicas and similar structures around the world, including Las Vegas's replica and Tokyo Tower in Japan, both of which pay homage to its unique architectural style.
